Get to know Alex Covey in 10 questions.
Alex is a Private Client Tax Manager, with 18 years of experience, advising private clients. He has previously worked for a large regional firm in Somerset, and a top 5 firm in London.
He is a fully qualified Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA), Tax Technician (ATT), and Accounts Technician (MAAT).
He is experienced at managing a large portfolio of personal tax clients, including dealing with;
- Self Assessment tax returns and annual compliance, for individuals and trusts and estates;
- Residency advice (including for clients arriving in or leaving the UK) – Reviewing a client’s residence position under the statutory residence test and setting out their liability to UK tax as a result of this;
- Remittance Basis and new Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) Regime – advising clients on their liability to UK tax under the old and new regimes for taxing UK and foreign source income and gains;
- Capital Gains Tax (CGT), including completion of Residential Property CGT Returns, and non-resident CGT returns;
- Pension Annual Allowance reviews, to check whether clients have a tapered annual allowance, whether they have a tax charge, and to make sure that they are aware of their options for making tax efficient use of the pensions;
- Inheritance Tax (IHT) – Reviewing a client’s IHT position, discussing their goals and making recommendations to help them achieve their IHT goals;
- Remuneration planning – working with owner managed businesses, to ensure that they have efficient remuneration packages in place, which meet their goals for profit extraction, considered from both a company and personal perspective; and
- Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED) – Overseeing the ATED process and completing returns for all clients who are affected by ATED, whether paying the charge, or claiming relief from the charge.
Alex also has a passion for property, is a landlord himself, and is experienced at advising clients with rental portfolios.
Alex likes to imagine himself as if he were each of his clients, to help to tell them what he would like to know, if he were in their position.
Outside of work, Alex plays hockey for Brighton and Hove, runs and works out and is a keen hiker, having climbed 118 of the 190 mountains in Wales. He also has passion for cars and driving, and loves watching motorsport (F1 and MotoGP). Alex is also a Liverpool fan.
