Selling or exiting a business: How to value your business?
27th November 2014
Our sixth and final workshop for 2014 took place at MyHotel, Jubilee Street on 25 November and generated a lot of interest from local businesses who were looking to understand the importance of an exit plan and the options available to them.
The workshop was hosted by our managing director, Paul Feist, Peter Hegethorne, Director at Plus Accounting and Adrian Alexander, Corporate Finance Partner at Mazars.
Adrian ran through the features of the current marketplace and what this meant for businesses looking to sell or directors looking to exit their business. Adrian stressed the importance of planning now and ensuring that efficient and effective due diligence was in place from both the legal and accounting point of view. It is important for businesses to plot their lifecycle and summarise a clear plan of where they are now, where they want to be and how they are going to get there. Having all of these factors in place will aid the successful sale or exit of a business.
Paul then went on to discuss the main differences between selling the shares of a business and the sale of the assets and Peter discussed in more detail the Entrepreneur’s Relief and Inheritance Tax implications and benefits.
The final part of the workshop saw Adrian discuss a case study and the delegates had to work out how to value this business and the factors affecting its final valuation. This proved to be an interesting task and the delegates really understood all the factors that could potentially harm the final valuation of the business – this emphasised that this is vitally important to plan for your exit or sale now and don’t leave it to chance.
The delegates stayed for a while after to discuss the other alternatives to sale with Adrian and the full presentation is available to download below. If you have any questions about any of the aspects involved, please do not hesitate to contact us on the information below.
