First Workshop of 2015 - Funding Solutions for the local SME Community
27th January 2015
We are back, our first Workshop of 2015 was a great success! We covered the topic of Alternative Finance and business plans for our first Workshop and it proved to be a topic that generated some great discussion.
Our programme of Workshops in 2015 will be held at MyHotel, Jubilee Street , a great venue and location for attendees and they do great bacon rolls!
Today’s Workshop was attended by Alternative Finance lenders and local businesses who were looking to understand the alternative finance platform and the importance of having a strong business plan in place before looking at the funding options available on the market.
The Workshop was hosted by our Director, Jamie Young and Tom Beaumont from Invest & Fund.
Tom ran through the features of the current marketplace and what this meant for businesses looking to raise finance and seek investment. Tom stressed the importance of planning now and ensuring that efficient and effective due diligence was in place.
Tom went on to discuss the platform used by Invest & Fund and stressed that they are constantly tweaking and working with their clients to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved for the business and the investor. They are keen to have that human contact and understand the business and their direction, Tom also advised that it is of paramount importance that businesses work with their accountants and advisors before seeking funding. Having all of these factors in place will aid the funding process and help grow a sustainable business model.
Jamie then went on to discuss why it is important to have a business plan in place;it helps the entrepreneur to clarify their business, what it does and how it is going to work. The main point stressed throughout was to know your audience, whether you are seeking funding from venture capital, crowdfunding, peer to peer or the bank you must tailor your plan and your pitch to suit that audience. Financial data is important to any investor and ensuring that this information is viable in your market place will help your funding process.
Jamie mentioned that when writing your business plan you should include a thorough analysis of risk and how you can deal that risk. Remember when evaluating your business plan an investor will be looking for quick reasons why not to invest and a poorly written business plan will mean you will not get the investment you are looking for.
The delegates were very keen to ask questions, discuss personal sitatuons and some other alternative finance experts in the audience were able to discuss their own experiences, all of this generated some interesting and informative debate.
The delegates stayed for a while after to discuss the alternative funding options available within the market and the full presentation is available to download below.
